Fees on Your Ad Budget: Budget Fee or Agency Surcharge?

Fees on the ad budget are one of the most confusing topics when comparing proposals. Sometimes they're called a management fee, sometimes a surcharge, sometimes a budget fee. Sometimes they apply from the first euro, sometimes only above a threshold. Here we lay out how the Plaith budget fee works and how it compares, including where it doesn't look good.

How the Plaith Budget Fee Works

The fee is tiered and applies to the monthly total of your ad spend:

  • 10% on the first €2,000,
  • 8% on the portion above €2,000 up to €5,000,
  • 6% on the portion above €5,000.

It's the same in all packages. It also applies to Booster credit that's used, because that credit is delivered as ads.

Tiered on the Total, Not Separately

The tiers apply to the sum of your own budget and the credit. An example: €3,000 own budget and €1,000 of credit per month give a fee of €360. Calculated separately, it would be €380. With €25,000 budget and €2,500 of credit, it's €1,790 instead of €1,880.

Budget Fee vs. Agency Surcharge

In the expert report, three German agency packages charge 5% of the ad budget and one charges 10% on the portion above €1,000 per month. We compare the average of these four surcharges with the Plaith fee:

Ad budget per monthPlaith budget feeas % of budgetAverage percentage surcharge (sample)as % of budget
€1,000€10010.0%€37.503.8%
€1,500€15010.0%€68.754.6%
€2,000€20010.0%€1005.0%
€3,000€2809.3%€162.505.4%
€5,000€4408.8%€287.505.8%
€10,000€7407.4%€6006.0%
€25,000€1,6406.6%€1,537.506.2%

The honest side: At small and mid-size budgets, the Plaith fee is higher than the average surcharge. At €3,000, it's 9.3% vs. 5.4%. If you only look at this row, you'd think the agency is cheaper.

Why the Fee Alone Isn't Enough

With agencies, the surcharge comes on top of the retainer, and the retainer is higher. If you add up everything that goes to the service provider each month, it looks different:

Package and ad budget per monthPlaith: package + budget feeClassic without surchargesClassic with average surchargeDifference per month
Start, €1,500€949€1,885.96€1,954.71€1,005.71
Growth, €3,000€1,779€3,485.39€3,647.89€1,868.89

Scale, €25,000€6,639€9,083.40€10,620.90€3,981.90

With Growth and a €3,000 budget, you pay Plaith €1,779 per month for package and fee. The classic benchmark for management plus 12 videos, with the average surcharge, is €3,647.89. The difference: €1,868.89 per month.

Over 24 Months: Fees in the Total Spend

How We Run the Comparison

Both sides invest exactly the same total spend. On the Plaith side, it consists of your own ad budget, the setup fee, the package price, the budget fee and, if selected, the Booster. On the classic side, we subtract the cost of management and videos from the same amount. The basis is the benchmark from the expert report (Start €1,885.96, Growth €3,485.39, Scale €9,083.40 per month). The rest goes into ads. We don't include an agency setup fee there. Agency surcharges on the ad budget (for example 5% on everything or 10% on the portion above €1,000 per month, expert report section 4.1) are deliberately not included, so Plaith's lead is, if anything, larger.

S3: Growth, €3,000 Budget, €10,000 Booster, ROAS 5

In S3, you pay Plaith a fee of €360 per month (without credit it would be €280), €8,640 over 24 months. That's included in total spend.

In S8, it's €470 per month and €11,280 over 24 months.

With average surcharges, an extra €4,735.63 goes to the agency in the classic model at the same spend. "What you keep" there drops to €82,355.03. Plaith's lead thus grows from €125,683.08 to €139,889.97. That's consistent with the note in the main comparison: surcharges are deliberately not included there, and Plaith's lead is, if anything, larger with them. The higher Plaith fee on small budgets doesn't change that, because the agency retainer more than offsets the difference.

What to Watch for with Fees on Your Ad Budget

  1. What is the fee calculated on? The entire budget, only above a threshold, or tiered?
  2. Does it also apply to additional budget? At Plaith, yes, including Booster credit.
  3. What comes on top? Retainer, videos, setup.
  4. How does it develop with the budget? A fixed rate grows linearly; tiered rates drop.
  5. Compare the total: Only all costs together give you a fair comparison.

Why Fees on the Budget Exist at All

More budget often means more work: more ad sets, more tests, more monitoring. A fee on the budget ties compensation to that scope. The downside: it grows even when the workload stays the same. Tiers soften this, because the rate drops as the budget grows.

What the Booster Is

The Booster is an add-on module. Your ad budget then runs through Plaith instead of going directly to Meta. We pass our purchasing terms on to you as an ad budget package: for a one-time payment, you get one tenth of it as additional ad credit every month for 24 months, on top of your own budget. That turns €10,000 into €1,000 per month and €24,000 over the term. The credit is only valid with an active Plaith contract, is non-transferable, is not paid out in cash and is only used for ad delivery. If you cancel, you get the one-time payment back minus the credit already delivered, with a minimum of €0. If the platform's purchasing terms change, Plaith can end running packages with 30 days' notice; the same refund rule then applies. You'll clarify the exact terms in a call.

What You Gain When You See Fees as a Total

You have two proposals with different fees and can't tell which is cheaper. You don't want to focus on a small percentage and overlook the big retainer.

With the sum of fee and retainer, you see in one step what a proposal costs you.

What you get out of it:

  • Real comparability. At a €3,000 budget, you pay €1,779 per month in the Growth package, versus €3,647.89 with the classic model including the average surcharge.
  • Weaknesses in the open. At €280, the Plaith fee alone is higher than the average surcharge of €162.50. You see that immediately and can put it in context.
  • Predictability. The tiers of 10, 8 and 6% apply to the sum of your own budget and credit. You can run the numbers on every increase in advance.

What the fee means for you depends on the results of your ads. ROAS remains an assumption.

Objections, Answered Honestly

Fees on the budget cause debate. Three objections we answer openly:

"A fee on the budget is always bad."

Not automatically. It makes costs predictable as the budget grows. What matters is what you pay in total: fee plus retainer plus videos. The article Agency Charging a Percentage of Your Ad Spend shows how agency surcharges grow over the term.

"Why does the fee also apply to Booster credit?"

Because that credit is also delivered and managed as ads. We include the fee on it in every example. That way you see the full total spend.

"On a small budget, the agency is cheaper."

On the fee alone, often yes. Including the retainer, it looks different: at a €3,000 budget, it's €1,779 vs. €3,647.89 per month. So always compare the total.

Frequently Asked Questions

How high is a typical fee on the ad budget?

For Germany, our expert report documents 5% of the budget for three packages and 10% above €1,000 for one package. That's a sample, not a statement about the market.

How high is the Plaith budget fee?

10% on the first €2,000 per month, 8% up to €5,000, 6% above that, tiered on the monthly total. At €1,500, that's €150; at €3,000, €280; at €5,000, €440.

Is a budget fee fair?

It's fair if it's disclosed openly and you can compare it together with all other costs.
