Facebook Ads on a Small Budget: Is a Service Provider Worth It?
Daniel Huber, MBAFounder of Plaith

Many business owners start with a modest budget. That's sensible: test first, then scale. But this is exactly the phase where fixed service provider costs hit hardest. If the agency costs more than you put into ads, your ads have to perform very well for the math to work.
Facebook Ads on a Small Budget: Fixed Costs Are the Problem
A service provider costs barely less at a €1,500 ad budget than at €5,000. Management, coordination and above all new videos take effort no matter how big your budget is. That means the smaller your budget, the larger the share of fixed costs in your total spend.
What You Pay per Month
| Package and ad budget per month | Plaith: package + budget fee | Classic without surcharges | Classic with average surcharge | Difference per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Start, €1,500 | €949 | €1,885.96 | €1,954.71 | €1,005.71 |
| Growth, €3,000 | €1,779 | €3,485.39 | €3,647.89 | €1,868.89 |
At a €1,500 budget, Plaith's Start package costs you €949 per month for the package and budget fee. The classic benchmark for management plus four videos is €1,885.96, which is more than your ad budget.
Worked Example S1: €1,500 Budget, 12 Months
Start package, €1,500 own budget per month, no Booster, 12 months, ROAS 3 as an assumption.
How We Run the Comparison
Both sides invest exactly the same total spend. On the Plaith side, it consists of your own ad budget, the setup fee, the package price, the budget fee and, if selected, the Booster. On the classic side, we subtract the cost of management and videos from the same amount. The basis is the benchmark from the expert report (Start €1,885.96, Growth €3,485.39, Scale €9,083.40 per month). The rest goes into ads. We don't include an agency setup fee there. Agency surcharges on the ad budget (for example 5% on everything or 10% on the portion above €1,000 per month, expert report section 4.1) are deliberately not included, so Plaith's lead is, if anything, larger.
| S1 · Start · €1,500 own budget/month · Booster €0 · 12 months · ROAS 3 (assumption) | Plaith | Classic (same total spend) |
|---|---|---|
| Total spend (everything you pay) | €30,887 | €30,887 |
| of which to the service provider | €12,887 | €22,631.52 |
| of which own ad budget to the platform | €18,000 | €8,255.48 |
| Booster credit during the period | no Booster | no leverage |
| Total ad budget | €18,000 | €8,255.48 |
| Revenue at ROAS 3 (assumption) | €54,000 | €24,766.44 |
| ROPS (revenue ÷ service provider costs) | 4.19 | 1.09 |
| Revenue per euro spent | €1.75 | €0.80 |
| What you keep (revenue minus spend, not profit) | €23,113 | −€6,120.56 |
Both sides pay €30,887. Plaith gets €12,887 of it: setup fee €1,499, package €9,588 and budget fee €1,800. The classic side spends €22,631.52 on management and videos. That leaves €8,255.48 for ads.
At ROAS 3, that's €54,000 in revenue with Plaith and €24,766.44 with the classic model. What you keep: €23,113 vs. −€6,120.56.
How Sensitive Is the Result?
| ROAS (assumption) | ROPS Plaith | ROPS classic | Revenue per € Plaith | Revenue per € classic | What you keep Plaith | What you keep classic |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 4.19 | 1.09 | €1.75 | €0.80 | €23,113 | −€6,120.56 |
| 4 | 5.59 | 1.46 | €2.33 | €1.07 | €41,113 | €2,134.92 |
| 5 | 6.98 | 1.82 | €2.91 | €1.34 | €59,113 | €10,390.40 |
At ROAS 3, "What you keep" is negative in the classic model. It only turns positive at ROAS 4, and at ROAS 5 it comes to €10,390.40. With Plaith, the value is positive under all three assumptions. Keep in mind: even a positive value isn't profit yet; cost of goods and staff are still missing.
With Percentage Surcharges
Some agencies also charge a percentage of the budget. If you factor in the average from the sample, S1 looks like this:
| Classic model, S1 | Ad budget | Service provider costs | Total spend | Revenue | What you keep |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plaith (for comparison) | €18,000 | €12,887 | €30,887 | €54,000 | €23,113 |
| C: same total spend (main comparison) | €8,255.48 | €22,631.52 | €30,887 | €24,766.44 | −€6,120.56 |
| C with percentage surcharges | €7,957.09 | €22,929.91 | €30,887 | €23,871.27 | −€7,015.73 |
| A: same budget, one-time amount 1:1 into ads | €18,000 | €22,631.52 | €40,631.52 | €54,000 | €13,368.48 |
| B: like A plus percentage surcharges | €18,000 | €23,456.52 | €41,456.52 | €54,000 | €12,543.48 |
Over 24 Months
| S1 at 12 and 24 months (same ROAS) | 12 months Plaith | 12 months classic | 24 months Plaith | 24 months classic |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Total spend | €30,887 | €30,887 | €60,275 | €60,275 |
| Booster credit during the period | €0 | - | €0 | - |
| Total ad budget | €18,000 | €8,255.48 | €36,000 | €15,011.96 |
| Revenue | €54,000 | €24,766.44 | €108,000 | €45,035.88 |
| ROPS | 4.19 | 1.09 | 4.45 | 0.99 |
| Revenue per euro spent | €1.75 | €0.80 | €1.79 | €0.75 |
| What you keep (not profit) | €23,113 | −€6,120.56 | €47,725 | −€15,239.12 |
The pattern holds over two years as well. In the classic model, the negative amount grows to −€15,239.12, while with Plaith "What you keep" rises to €47,725.
What This Means for You
On a small budget, every euro that goes into ads instead of fixed costs counts. The worked example shows how strongly this share drives the result. The good news: you can influence it. The following steps will help.
What You Can Do on a Small Budget
- Keep fixed costs low. Check how much of your spend goes into ads.
- Focus on one offer. With a small budget, one focused campaign is worth more than three half-hearted ones.
- Keep creatives fresh. Especially on a small budget, good videos decide whether ads land.
- Review weekly. A report with concrete inquiries shows you early on whether it's working.
- Calculate conservatively. Plan with ROAS 3, not with the best case.
Plaith's Start Package
The Start package costs €799 per month. It includes one topic campaign and up to 4 new AI videos per month (up to 15 seconds). On top of that come ongoing image variants and new creatives. Plus the budget fee. Setup costs a one-time €1,999, or €1,499 for the first ten customers. The package can be canceled monthly.
When a Service Provider Isn't Worth It on a Small Budget
If your offer doesn't sell yet or your margin is very low, even the cheapest service provider won't help much. In that case, sharpen your offer and landing page first. Advertising amplifies what works. It doesn't fix a weak offer.
What You Concretely Gain on a Small Budget
You're starting with a modest budget because you first want to see whether ads work for your offer. Every euro that goes into fixed costs instead of ads makes that test more expensive.
When more of your spend goes into ads, your test gets a fair chance.
Here's what you gain:
- More reach for the same spend. At a €1,500 budget over 12 months, €18,000 goes into ads with Plaith, versus €8,255.48 with the classic model.
- Lower fixed costs. Package plus budget fee comes to €949 per month in the Start package. Management plus four videos costs €1,885.96 with the classic model.
- A better data foundation. More ads delivered give you more feedback for deciding whether to keep going.
Whether the test succeeds depends on your offer and your ROAS. No service provider can take that off your hands.
Objections, Answered Honestly
On a small budget, doubts are especially justified. You should check three of them before you decide.
"With a small budget, I'd rather do it myself."
That can make sense if you have the time and know-how. But count your hours honestly. Videos and tests also cost you time that you then don't have for day-to-day business.
"Nothing pays off at €1,500."
As a blanket statement, that's not true. In the worked example, Plaith leaves a positive amount under all three ROAS assumptions, the classic model only from ROAS 4. Not profit, but a difference you should know about.
"Plaith's budget fee is high on a small budget."
That's true. On the first €2,000 per month it's 10%, more than the average agency surcharge. In return, the package is significantly cheaper than management plus videos. All the numbers are in the article Fees on Your Ad Budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much budget do I need for Facebook ads?
There's no fixed minimum. Our smallest worked example starts at €1,500 per month. What matters is that a large part of your spend goes into ads and doesn't stay with the service provider.
Is an agency worth it with a €1,500 budget?
In our worked example, the classic benchmark for management plus four videos, at €1,885.96, is higher than the ad budget. At ROAS 3, that leaves a negative amount. Run the numbers for your case with your own ROAS.
Can I start small and increase later?
Yes. In the standard packages, you pay your ad budget directly to the platform; you agree with us on when and how to increase it. Larger budgets spread fixed costs better.
Which package fits a small budget?
At Plaith, the package depends on the number of offers and how many videos you need. Start is designed for one offer with a few new videos.
