Ad Cost Calculator for Business Owners: How to Run the Numbers on Meta Ads
Daniel Huber, MBAFounder of Plaith

Many business owners plan their advertising with a single number: the monthly Meta budget. That's not enough. In the end, you also pay for management, videos, setup and fees. Below you get a five-step method and eight fully worked scenarios. All numbers are recalculated exactly and labeled as worked examples.
Ad Cost Calculator: The Five-Step Method
Step 1: Set Your Total Spend
Decide what you want to spend in total over a given period. Twelve or 24 months make sense, because ads need time to learn. Total spend is the sum of ad budget and all service provider costs.
Step 2: Break Down Service Provider Costs
Write down everything that doesn't go to the platform:
- setup fee (one-time),
- monthly retainer × months,
- videos and creatives, if not included in the package,
- percentage surcharges or budget fees,
- add-on modules such as a Booster.
Step 3: Determine Your Ad Budget
Ad budget = total spend minus service provider costs. With Plaith, Booster credit may be added. This is the amount that actually runs ads.
Step 4: Calculate Revenue with an Assumed ROAS
Revenue = ad budget × ROAS. Run several assumptions, for example 3, 4 and 5. That shows you how sensitive your result is. ROAS isn't a fixed number; it varies with your offer, the season and your creatives.
Step 5: Derive the Metrics
- Revenue per euro spent = revenue ÷ total spend
- What you keep = revenue minus total spend (not profit)
- ROPS = revenue ÷ service provider costs
Eight Scenarios at a Glance
How We Run the Comparison
Both sides invest exactly the same total spend. On the Plaith side, it consists of your own ad budget, the setup fee, the package price, the budget fee and, if selected, the Booster. On the classic side, we subtract the cost of management and videos from the same amount. The basis is the benchmark from the expert report (Start €1,885.96, Growth €3,485.39, Scale €9,083.40 per month). The rest goes into ads. We don't include an agency setup fee there. Agency surcharges on the ad budget (for example 5% on everything or 10% on the portion above €1,000 per month, expert report section 4.1) are deliberately not included, so Plaith's lead is, if anything, larger.
| # | Package | Own budget/month | Booster | Months | ROAS (assumption) | Total spend (both sides) | ROPS Plaith / classic | Revenue per € Plaith / classic | What you keep Plaith | What you keep classic |

How to read the table: Each row is a separate scenario with its own ROAS assumption. "Total spend" is the same on both sides. The differences in "What you keep" come only from the cost structure and, where selected, from the Booster.
What the Overview Shows
- Small budgets react most strongly to service provider costs. In S1, "What you keep" is negative in the classic model: −€6,120.56.
- Large budgets shrink the relative gap. In S5, the two sides are closer together because fixed costs become small relative to the budget.
- ROAS determines the level, costs determine the gap. Scenarios with ROAS 3 have less room on both sides.
One Scenario in Detail: S8
Growth package, €5,000 own budget per month, Booster with a one-time payment of €5,000, 24 months, conservative assumption of ROAS 3.
| S8 · Growth · €5,000 own budget/month · Booster €5,000 · 24 months · ROAS 3 (assumption) | Plaith | Classic (same total spend) |
|---|---|---|
| Total spend (everything you pay) | €173,755 | €173,755 |
| of which to the service provider | €53,755 (incl. Booster €5,000) | €83,649.36 |
| of which own ad budget to the platform | €120,000 | €90,105.64 |
| Booster credit during the period | €12,000 | no leverage |
| Total ad budget | €132,000 | €90,105.64 |
| Revenue at ROAS 3 (assumption) | €396,000 | €270,316.92 |
| ROPS (revenue ÷ service provider costs) | 7.37 | 3.23 |
| Revenue per euro spent | €2.28 | €1.56 |
| What you keep (revenue minus spend, not profit) | €222,245 | €96,561.92 |
Plaith calculation: setup fee €1,499 + package €1,499 × 24 (€35,976) + budget fee €11,280 + Booster one-time payment €5,000 = €53,755. Adding your own ad budget of €120,000 gives a total spend of €173,755.
Classic calculation: €173,755 minus management and videos (€3,485.39 × 24 = €83,649.36) leaves €90,105.64 for ads.
At ROAS 3, Plaith turns every euro spent into €2.28 of revenue, the classic model €1.56. What you keep: €222,245 vs. €96,561.92.
How Sensitive Is the Result?
| ROAS (assumption) | ROPS Plaith | ROPS classic | Revenue per € Plaith | Revenue per € classic | What you keep Plaith | What you keep classic |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 7.37 | 3.23 | €2.28 | €1.56 | €222,245 | €96,561.92 |
| 4 | 9.82 | 4.31 | €3.04 | €2.07 | €354,245 | €186,667.56 |
| 5 | 12.28 | 5.39 | €3.80 | €2.59 | €486,245 | €276,773.20 |
If ROAS falls, "What you keep" falls on both sides. That's the main reason you should never plan with just one assumption.
What the Booster Is
The Booster is an add-on module. Your ad budget then runs through Plaith instead of going directly to Meta. We pass our purchasing terms on to you as an ad budget package: for a one-time payment, you get one tenth of it as additional ad credit every month for 24 months, on top of your own budget. That turns €10,000 into €1,000 per month and €24,000 over the term. The credit is only valid with an active Plaith contract, is non-transferable, is not paid out in cash and is only used for ad delivery. If you cancel, you get the one-time payment back minus the credit already delivered, with a minimum of €0. If the platform's purchasing terms change, Plaith can end running packages with 30 days' notice; the same refund rule then applies. You'll clarify the exact terms in a call.
Common Calculation Mistakes
- Only counting the ad budget: Then management, videos and fees are missing.
- Comparing agency prices without videos: Many proposals don't include videos.
- Planning with a single ROAS: Always run a conservative version too.
- Confusing what you keep with profit: Cost of goods, staff and taxes are still missing.
- Comparing different periods: Setup and Booster are spread over the term. Always compare periods of the same length.
Your Checklist for Your Own Calculator
- Set the period.
- Set your total spend.
- Collect all service provider costs, including one-time costs.
- Calculate the ad budget.
- Calculate revenue at ROAS 3, 4 and 5.
- Work out revenue per euro spent and what you keep.
- Check against your gross margin whether it pays off.
What You Gain by Running the Numbers Properly Once
You plan your ads alongside day-to-day business and have little time for spreadsheets. At the same time, you don't want to start with a budget that ends up not paying for itself.
With five steps, you have a calculation you can base your decision on.
Here's what you get:
- Time. You do the math thoroughly once. After that, you only change budget, term or ROAS.
- Predictability. You see in advance how your scenario reacts to a conservative assumption. In S8 at ROAS 3, you keep €222,245 with Plaith, versus €96,561.92 with the classic model.
- No blind spots. Management, videos, setup and fees sit in the same calculation as your ad budget.
The calculation is only as good as your assumptions. So err on the side of caution rather than optimism.
Objections, Answered Honestly
We hear three objections when it comes to ad cost calculators. Here they are, with honest answers.
"I'd rather just calculate with the ad budget."
Then you're missing management, videos, setup and fees. Especially on a small budget, that's often the bigger block. Without it, every ad looks better than it is.
"A calculator is too imprecise for me."
A calculator is only as good as its assumptions. But it shows you which assumption tips your result. That's exactly what helps you negotiate and plan.
"None of the eight scenarios fits me."
It doesn't have to. Take the scenario closest to your budget. Then replace budget, term and ROAS with your own values. The article ROPS explains what the ROPS metric shows you along the way.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my ad costs correctly?
Add up everything you pay for advertising: ad budget, management, videos, setup and fees. Only then divide your revenue by this total spend.
What period makes sense?
Twelve or 24 months. One-time costs such as setup or a Booster play out over the term; short periods distort the picture.
How accurate are calculators like this?
As accurate as the assumptions. The costs are fixed; ROAS is an assumption. That's why every result should come with a range of conservative values.
